Flute and piano lessons

I offer flute lessons for beginner to advanced students, and piano lessons for beginner to intermediate students. I believe in the positive influence that music can have on all aspects of a person's life, socially, intellectually, and emotionally. My approach to teaching music is student focused; I base my teaching on the specific needs of the student, their interests, and their learning style.

I am well versed in the Royal Conservatory of Music's curriculum and am happy to coach students towards the completion of music exams. However, I believe that a well-rounded musical education can be achieved without examinations.

Teaching Goals for My Students
Though working together, my hope is that my students:
• Are successful musicians, not just flutists or pianists
• Play with proper technique and tone
• Play musically, and know how to phrase, where to breathe, and how to express the composer’s intentions and their own emotions through playing
• Play a wide variety of repertoire
• Become their own teacher by applying the basics of music theory and technique, solving their own technique problems, and learning to make musical choices
• Include music as a joyful part of their lives

Flute and Piano Lessons: Lessons

FAQ

HOW MUCH DO LESSONS COST?

My lesson rate is currently $55 per hour or $27.5 for half-hour lessons. I bill six weeks at a time and require payment before the first lesson in the billing cycle.

WHERE DO YOU TEACH?

Online and in-person all from my home studio in Kingston, Ontario.

CAN WE MEET YOU BEFORE WE SIGN UP FOR LESSONS?

Yes! I offer a free 30-minute Zoom consultation for those interested to answer any question you have about starting the flute or piano. Please don't hesitate to reach out!

WHEN SHOULD MY CHILD START FLUTE LESSONS?

Every child is different, but typically children are at least seven years old when they start playing the flute. This is because their hands and arms must be large enough to properly hold the instrument without injuring themselves. Modified flutes with curved head joints are a good option for young students as they reduce the length of the flute.

HOW DO I GO ABOUT FINDING A FLUTE?

I recommend going to a store that specializes in selling band instruments. Here in Kingston, Long & McQuade is a good option, as they also offer rentals at a low cost. As well as a flute, you will need supplies such as a music stand, a metronome, a swab to clean your flute, a polishing cloth, and pad paper to clean the inside part of the keys.
